ALIVE Project co-founders Stewart Smith and Allan Molnar in session"Blow from the lips, like this..." says Dan Perantoni as he models the most efficient way to blow the air into the tuba. The student simply imitates what he sees and the results are immediately audible; the resulting sound is more solid, full and flexible. Perantoni then instructs him to play again as a great singer would perform it. The student plays the example again and the surrounding class nods in approval. This freshman from the tuba studio at the University of Manitoba has clearly impressed Mr. P with his performance of a movement from the Hindemith Sonate and a low-register etude by Phil Snedecor. At the end of their 20-minute lesson in front of the class, the student returns to his seat amid applause from the audience. The student has just learned from one of the masters and will use what he learned to take him to the next level.

This scene is typical of any masterclass. What is not typical is that the class is not being held at Indiana University, but at a grade K-12 school in Winnipeg, Manitoba...

Movies, TV shows, commercials...these are just a few of the places you might hear some really fantastic music and some fantastic tuba-playing. The Hollywood studios are where most of it is recorded.
And just who are the tuba players we hear the most?

A very long time ago, before the Internet, before computer games and even before television, there was radio; it was the time of Let’s Pretend, Red Ryder, Terry and the Pirates, The House of Mystery and The Shadow; I loved those Saturday morning radio shows. And I remember how exciting for me it was, during the time of radio on those cold winter nights, to sit with my family and listen to the orange grove frost warnings read by some man by the name of Gene Boulet. The family, gathered close together around the heater trying to keep warm while listening to the radio; that’s a very cozy memory.

I also remember, at that early age, that the radio stations absolutely never mentioned the call letters of another station; one would never hear the KHJ call letters mentioned on KFI or KNX on KECA, they refered to them as “That other Station.”

Arnold Jacobs's machines for measuring all types of brass playing functions were fascinating. They could even be hypnotizing and if we weren't careful they could become preoccupying. But Jake was a very wise man; he always pointed out, after a deep analytical session on breathing or numerous other brass playing functions, that the primary aspect of music making was the music itself and that the music should be the motivating force in learning how to play.   To "tell a story," "read a poem," "play a soundtrack," were phrases he frequently used in his teaching.

A trumpet player, when asked what he thought of the sound of a tuba ensemble, once said: "It sounds like a 45 rpm record of a trumpet ensemble played at 33 rpm."

In an effort to better understand how our tuba culture is doing, it is important to hear how we are received by those outside the tuba/euphonium world. How is a tuba or euphonium recording heard by a music-savvy outsider? That's the angle we like to get here at Tubanews.com.
