Miraphone has rolled out a handful of new products for 2009. They have also re-introduced some familiar tubas that we have not seen in several years. The 185, 190 and 291 CC tubas and the 1281 “Petruschka” F tuba.
The new faces here are the 291 “Bruckner” CC tuba and the 1281 "Petruschka” F tuba. Both instruments were designed in collaboration with engineers and artists the world over.

The “Petruschka” is a front-action piston F tuba. It is the younger sibling to the “Firebird” F tuba and is the first ever piston F tuba made by Miraphone. The “Petruschka” is made with a shorter, more compact design. The wide bore valve section is designed with orchestral volume and projection in mind. The conical taper of the piston valve system starts at 0.772’’ and opens to a full 0.804’’ through the 5th valve. This tuba is being touted as an instrument for all-around playing.
The 291 “Bruckner” CC tuba , was designed to serve as a rotary equivalent of the very successful 1291 and 1292 CC tubas. The 291 was based on the design of the 191 BBb. The idea here is to connect the sound of a rotary BBb with the playing characteristics and quick response of the 1291 CC. The bell is a wide-flared 18.5” size of the 191. The conical bore 0.803’’ – 0.835’’. This is another fine new option for a broad-sounding orchestral tuba. The 185 and 190 CC tubas are instruments that are being re-introduced. The 185 is a familiar old standby for many players that remember the Sun Valley days (as well as the Mirafone spelling). Tommy Johnson preferred a 185 for the bulk of his work up until the 186 and eventually the 190 came out. It's a nimble CC that can move, project and sing. It has a lightning-quick response and is one of those do-it-all tubas. The 190 was a very large CC tuba, built to compare to other larger 5/4 and 6/4 tubas that were on the market. The bore on the 190 comes in at a whopping .835 while the bell is 19.5”. This huge tuba can be heard on several movie soundtracks in the early to mid-80's. Both the 185 and 190 are recent re-starts after years of not being produced. Their re-introduction was a result of popular demand.
