News - Tuba/Euphonium News

Reliable sources report that the Berlin Philharmonic audition was at the very highest level. The contestants were:

Rino Ghiretti (41), Italian - la Scala, Turin
Tonni Hellebek (34), Danish - Copenhagen Philharmonic
Markus Hoetzel (34), German - NDR Symphony, Hamburg*
Thomas Keller (31), German - Berlin Staatskapelle
Sven Kock (25), German - Bielefeld Philharmonic*

Michael Pircher (27), Austrian - Tonkuenstler Orchester Oesterreich*
David Polkinhorn (27), British - Saarbruecken Radio Symphony
Alexander von Puttkamer (33)- German - Bavarian Radio Symphony, Munich*
Steve Rosse (42) - American and Australian - Sydney Symphony
William Russell (23) - American - Chicago Civic Orchestra
Peter Stadlhofer (26) - Austrian - Vienna Volksoper*

First round:

Vaughn Williams with piano accompaniment 1st movement and in some cases 2nd movement.

Second round (* 7 players):

Siegfried, Rheingold, Fountains of Rome, Valkyries Ride (any order) - played on BBb from the tuba's usual position on stage.

Congratulations to the winner Alexander von Puttkamer and to the Berlin Philharmonic for running a very high quality audition.

Another source reports:

What else could be expected: Alex von Puttkamer won the Berlin audition yesterday. Markus Hoetzel, David Crib and a few others made it into the second round.

Alex played the Mahler Second recently with the BPO - they liked him and his excellent work. The first round was part of the VW, the second round was on B-Tuba - three excepts: Ride, Siegfried and Fontani di Roma.

That means of course that everyone can learn a lesson as always and that the position at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra opens up once again.
